As the NFL moves into Week 14 of its 2023 regular season, the race for the MVP award is heating up and getting interesting.
For much of the year, the frontrunners were thought to be Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles’ Jalen Hurts, both of whom were also thought to be arguably the two best quarterbacks in the game. But now, additional QBs in the San Francisco 49ers’ Brock Purdy and the Dallas Cowboys’ Dak Prescott have entered the race.
However, LeSean McCoy, a former star running back turned Fox Sports 1 commentator, says Miami Dolphins star wide receiver Tyreek Hill should be the favorite to win the MVP.
Hill is on pace to have a historic season. He has collected 1,481 receiving yards and 12 receiving touchdowns, both of which lead the NFL, and if he keeps going as he has, he has a real shot of becoming the first player to reach 2,000 receiving yards in a single season.
NFL News & Rumors: Tyreek Hill, Miami Dolphins Updates
The current single-season record for receiving yards is 1,964 by Hall of Famer Calvin Johnson back in 2012.
Hill’s impact on the Dolphins has been unmistakable. In 2021, the year before he arrived in a trade with the Chiefs, they finished 9-8. But this season, they’re 9-3, and even though they haven’t really beaten any quality teams yet, one has to agree they’re a contender to at least some extent.
Thanks to his exploits, Miami ranks No. 1 in passing yards and total yards, as well as in points scored and passing touchdowns.
Throughout NFL history, it has been very rare to see a non-quarterback win the regular season MVP. The last time it happened was in 2012 when Minnesota Vikings star running back Adrian Peterson claimed it; in fact, no wide receiver has ever won the award. Not even the transcendent Jerry Rice, arguably the greatest player in football history, ever won it.
Right now, many sportsbooks have Purdy as the favorite to win the MVP award, with a few favoring Prescott. Hill has five games left, including one against Prescott’s Cowboys, to make his case and make history.
