Despite impressive regular season statistics, Dak Prescott’s ability to lead the Dallas Cowboys to postseason success has been called into question.
Former Pro Bowl receiver and Super Bowl winner Greg Jennings recently expressed his doubts about Prescott’s future with the team, citing their 2-5 playoff record with him as the starter.
“They fall short in the postseason. This is why I don’t believe that they are truly going to extend him.”
While Prescott is undoubtedly a talented quarterback, his numbers and effectiveness have consistently dropped in the postseason. His passer rating, touchdown-interception ratio, and overall performance have not met expectations when it matters most. With three consecutive 12-win seasons resulting in only one playoff win, owner Jerry Jones’ patience may be wearing thin.
Prescott’s best career season in 2023, with 36 touchdown passes and 410 completions, did not translate to playoff success. If he fails to lead the Cowboys to at least the NFC Championship Game this year, his future with the team may be in jeopardy.
No one person or player can shoulder the entire responsibility for the Cowboys’ postseason struggles. However, in the NFL, often the blame falls back on the quarterback position.
As the 2024 season gets underway and progresses, a lot will be on the line for Prescott. If he is unable to get the team to a deep playoff run, it seems likely that Jones and the Cowboys’ front office would strongly consider moving on. Should he get them a couple of playoff wins, he’d likely get a new deal to remain in Dallas.

Despite his playoff struggles, Dak Prescott remains the best option for the Cowboys at quarterback. With a strong supporting cast, including CeeDee Lamb, and a stout defense, Prescott has the tools to succeed.
Extending Prescott would provide stability at the quarterback position, allowing the team to focus on other areas of need. It would also send a message to the rest of the team that the organization believes in its leader and is committed to building a winner around him.
The quarterback market is highly competitive, and finding a suitable replacement for Prescott would be challenging. The Cowboys would likely have to invest significant resources, including draft picks or salary cap space, to find a quarterback as good as Prescott.
Prescott has shown flashes of brilliance in the playoffs, including an impressive performance against the Los Angeles Rams in 2018. However, the team needs him to figure out how to put up consistently big numbers in the playoffs. He hasn’t been able to do that yet.
Ultimately, the Cowboys should extend Dak Prescott because he is a talented quarterback with a proven track record of success.
