A Focus On Reducing Turnovers
Poor decision making made Daniel Jones one of the most turnover-prone quarterbacks in the league last season.
He threw 12 interceptions, but, according to Pro Football Focus, he had nine other throws dropped by a defender. He had 29 passes classified as potential interceptions, fifth in the league, while he was second with 51 danger plays that could’ve resulted in a turnover.
Jones’ accuracy was a concern for the Giants in 2019. He was 33rd out of 35 quarterbacks in turnover worthy plays and 27th in on-target throws, three points below league average. He also fumbled a league-high 10 times.
The Giants need to do a better job of giving Jones the time to make the correct decisions. They completely revamped their offensive line in the offseason, using three of their first five draft picks on linemen. Andrew Thomas, the No. 4 overall pick out of Georgia, will step into the starting lineup right away, while third-round pick Matt Peart and fifth-rounder Shane Lemieux will compete for spots.
But the onus is firmly on Jones to improve his accuracy and not make so many high-risk throws. A little help from his offensive line and receivers wouldn’t hurt his development in this area, either.
