Giants Could Poach Emerging Star From Jets In Free Agency

Bryce Huff, Jets, NFL
East Rutherford, NJ — December 3, 2023 -- Falcons quarterback Desmond Ridder gets rid of the ball as he’s pursued by Bryce Huff of the Jets in the second half. The Atlanta Falcons topped the NY Jets 13-8 at MetLife Stadium on December 3, 2023 in East Rutherford, NJ.

New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen has his work cut out for him this offseason. After making the playoffs in Year 1, the team took a major step back in Year 2 on both sides of the ball.

Heading into the offseason, there have been plenty of questions surrounding the quarterback position. Schoen has said that the starting job is Daniel Jones’ when he’s healthy enough to return, but speculation has been rampant that New York is looking to move up in the 2024 NFL Draft to snag a quarterback.

Whoever is under center for the Giants will need a better supporting cast around them. The offensive line needs work and it wouldn’t hurt to add a true No. 1 receiver to the mix that can win at every level of the field.

Defensively, what the Giants need most is an upgraded pass rush. They have one building block in Kayvon Thibodeaux, who racked up 11.5 in Year 2 of his career. Opposite of him, the pass-rushing group is shaky with Azeez Ojulari unable to stay healthy.

Finding a bookend for Thibodeaux that can mix in with Ojulari would be ideal for the Giants this offseason. They have already been linked to Danielle Hunter as a potential suitor, but there are a few edge rushers who could help out Big Blue.

One potential target for them is Bryce Huff of the New York Jets. In the opinion of Matt Bowen of ESPN, the Giants are the best team fit for Huff in free agency during the 2024 NFL offseason.

“With a new defensive coordinator in Shane Bowen, the Giants would benefit from adding Huff — a flamethrower off the edge — to play opposite Kayvon Thibodeaux. Last season with the Jets, Huff produced 10 sacks and logged a pass rush win rate of 21.8% (eighth in the league). The Giants, meanwhile, were tied for 28th in sacks with 34,” wrote Bowen.

Huff has made it clear he is looking to maximize his earnings this offseason as he won’t be giving the Jets any hometown discount. He is one of the under-the-radar gems in the NFL as the Jets have higher profile players in Jermaine Johnson II and Will McDonald IV, first-round picks in each of the last two years.

But, neither of them produced at the level Huff did when it comes to getting after the quarterback. The undrafted free agent out of Memphis led Gang Green in sacks last season and should receive plenty of interest on the open market.

The Giants have a unique advantage in pursuing him compared to other teams around the league as it wouldn’t require uprooting and moving. They are a natural fit with the need for edge-rushing help and should make a competitive offer to Huff when free agency opens up.
