One of the bigger moves that the New York Giants made this offseason in free agency was signing wide receiver Parris Campbell. New York was looking to upgrade the pass catchers around Daniel Jones and wanted to add some speed to the offense and Campbell fit the bill.
2022 was the best season of the slot receiver’s career, the first that he was able to stay healthy and play in every game. The 17 games he played last season were more than he played in his first three seasons in the NFL combined, which was only 15.
Despite the struggles of the Indianapolis Colts offense overall, Campbell turned in a solid season, catching 63 passes for 623 yards and three touchdowns. Alas, the way things are trending this season with the Giants, he won’t come close to those marks.
New York is near the bottom of every offensive category in the NFL. Their offensive line has been playing at a record-low level, causing everything else to break down around them. As a result, Campbell has 16 receptions for only 85 yards through five games.
Remaining healthy once again has been nice to see, but the Giants are utilizing him much in an anemic passing offense. With the trade deadline set for October 31st, Campbell has been named as a player that could be on the move by Seth Trachtman of Yardbarker.
“Campbell cashed in after a breakout season with the Colts, but has yet to find his footing in New York. As the Giants continue their downfall, Campbell is an obvious trade candidate on a one-year deal.”
The Giants went about upgrading their passing game in an odd way this offseason, as they went heavy on slot receivers. Campbell was added while Sterling Shepard was re-signed and the team was awaiting Wan’Dale Robinson’s injury return. Lacking a go-to perimeter receiver that can consistently beat coverage has hurt this group.
A late-round pick is likely all the Giants would be able to get in return for Campbell, but that is better than nothing. Playing on an expiring contract and not playing at a level that makes him a must-keep player, it would not be surprising to see him on the move in the coming weeks.
