The New York Giants and Las Vegas Raiders were in similar boats this offseason. Both had star running backs in Saquon Barkley and Josh Jacobs that carried their offenses in 2022 seeking long-term contracts during the 2023 offseason.
Both teams also opted to use the franchise tag on those players. And now, the future is uncertain for both players as neither team was able to work out a long-term deal with their respected stars before the 4 p.m. ET deadline on Monday.
Adam Schefter reported the update on the Giants not being able to work out a deal with Barkley and the implications this could have. He is reporting that we won’t see the star running back when the Giants open up training camp next week and it is anyone’s guess when he will report to the team as he has yet to sign his franchise tag tender.
For the Giants, Saquon Barkley had played out the final year of his rookie contract on the fifth-year option. Injuries have plagued him throughout his career, but when healthy, he has proven to be one of the best running backs in the NFL.
Last season, he had a career-high 1,312 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground to go with 57 receptions, which tied for the team lead, for 338 receiving yards. He is an integral part of the team’s offense and replacing him will be virtually impossible should he not report.
For the Raiders, it has already been reported that he will hold out should no long-term deal get done. Now that a deal hasn’t been reached, the ball is in his court about when he will report, if at all, to the team.
Jacobs, who had the fifth-year option on his rookie contract declined by the Raiders last offseason, turned in a career season of his own. He led the NFL with 1,653 rushing yards, 393 offensive touches and 2,053 yards from scrimmage. Like Barkley with the Giants, Jacobs was the main producer for the Raiders last season offensively and will be very difficult to replace.
