The New York Giants have been one of the biggest winners during the 2023 NFL Draft. General manager Joe Schoen has done a wonderful job of navigating the draft board, making two moves up to nab their guy.
In the first round, New York moved up one spot to ensure that they landed Maryland cornerback Deonte Banks, addressing a major need in their defensive backfield. In Round 2, the board broke favorably and they addressed their biggest need on the interior of their offensive line, selecting center John Michael Schmitz out of Minnesota.
In Round 3, Schoen was on the phone again making a deal. The Giants completed a trade with the Cleveland Browns, moving up to No. 73. With that selection, they filled yet another hole on their roster, selecting Tennessee wide receiver Jalin Hyatt.
Coming into the offseason, atop the team’s to-do list was improving the weapons around quarterback Daniel Jones. Parris Campbell and Jamison Crowder were signed in free agency and tight end Darren Waller was acquired in a trade from the Las Vegas Raiders.
All three players represent nice upgrades for New York along with Hyatt. Hyatt is a true burner that brings another element to the Giants’ offense that was lacking overall speed last season. While there is plenty of work for him to round out his game, his strengths right now are exactly what the Giants need.
The 2022 Biletnikoff winner drew an interesting player comp as well. He was compared to Will Fuller, who was one of the best deep route runners in the NFL when healthy. If Jalin Hyatt can have the impact that Fuller did when he was able to stay on the field, the Giants’ offense will be much more explosive.
Having a player that can consistently take the top off of the defense will help Saquon Barkley and the running game as well. Teams will have to drop more players into coverage, leading to less loaded boxes and more operating room for Barkley to carve up opposing defenses.
