Giants Set Brutal NFL Record Against Jets In Week 8

The New York Giants have been making NFL history throughout the 2023 season for all of the wrong reasons. Their offense has been amongst the most inept that the league has ever seen, as generating points and yardage has been virtually impossible for the team.

Outside of a second-half performance against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 2, quarterback Daniel Jones has zero passing touchdowns. His backup, Tyrod Taylor, led the team on their first drive for an offensive touchdown in the first half against the Washington Commanders in Week 7.

On the season, the Giants have only two first-half touchdowns and only eight overall. That has led to them being uncompetitive prior to the defense getting things going in the last three games. New York has held the Buffalo Bills, Commanders and New York Jets to 14 or fewer points, yet the team is only 1-2.

A big reason for that is their inability to move the ball offensively. Against the Jets in Week 8, things reached a new low for the offense. Taylor suffered an injury to his ribs in the second quarter, which forced him out for the remainder of the game. With Jones, who is normally the starter, already sidelined, the Giants turned to undrafted free agent, Tommy DeVito.

Not surprisingly, the offense actually reached another level of ineptitude with DeVito taking his first career regular-season snaps. He finished the game 2-for-7 for -1 yard, as he didn’t complete a pass until overtime.

That followed up a 4-for-7 start for Taylor, who managed only eight yards before his exit. When you account for the four sacks they absorbed, losing 16 total yards, the Giants threw for a total of -9 yards in the game. According to OptaSTATS on X, formerly known as Twitter, that is the fewest passing yards for a team in an overtime game in NFL history.

The fact the Giants were in a position to win that game late in the fourth quarter is truly mind-boggling. They ran what was essentially a high school offense, continually handing the ball off as the game plan changed drastically with DeVito under center with virtually no passes being called.

That record isn’t the only one that the Giants have set this season. Unless Jones can pick things up the rest of the season, it certainly won’t be the last as New York is averaging 11.9 points per game on the season.
