For the last few weeks, New York Giants quarterback Tommy DeVito was the talk of the football world. He had played a big part in the Giants having some life breathed into their season, helping the team go on a three-game winning streak.

However, with opponents not having some film on the undrafted free agent, it has been tough sledding for DeVito and the Giants’ offense the last two weeks. The team was beaten thoroughly by the New Orleans Saints in Week 15 and was losing 20-3 at halftime against the Philadelphia Eagles on Christmas Day.

It was at that point that head coach Brian Daboll opted to make a change. DeVito was benched at halftime and replaced by veteran Tyrod Taylor. Taylor got the offense moving more than DeVito was able to, helping the Giants outscore the Eagles 15-0 in the third quarter.

The comeback attempt fell just short in the end, as New York lost 33-25. Despite being benched, and admitting it was a bit of a roller coaster to deal with, DeVito was rooting for his teammates to get the job done and pull off the upset.

After the game, DeVito spoke about getting taken out of the lineup at halftime. While disappointed in such a move being made, DeVito handled it with the poise of a multi-year veteran. He knows the NFL is a business and if you aren’t doing your job, there will be no hesitation to replace you.

“It’s just a constant reminder that it’s a business,” DeVito voiced candidly on the QB change. “They’re always going to try and find someone to replace you whatever it is but at the same [time], it is a business. It’s your job. I respect it, there’s no feelings one way or another.” (H/T Heavy)

No decision has been made about who will be the Giants’ starter in Week 17 against the Los Angeles Rams. Now officially eliminated from the postseason, it will be interesting to see which direction Daboll goes in with his starting quarterback spot.

The team knows what they have in Taylor, a steady veteran who was playing well before a chest injury landed him on injured reserve. DeVito, who could have more of a future with the franchise, could certainly benefit from taking more snaps, especially against a team in the Rams who have something to play for still.

While losing will help improve the Giants’ draft position, that isn’t something Daboll is worried about. He is going out there to win as many games as possible and will pick whichever quarterback puts the team in the best position to do that in Week 17.
