Giants Urged To Pursue Major Offensive Star In Free Agency

With the New York Giants playoff hopes being all but dashed in Week 15 by the New Orleans Saints, the team can start turning their attention to the 2024 offseason. It will be an important one for the franchise, as it will start Year 3 of the Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll regime.

There are some major question marks on the roster, none bigger than the quarterback position. What will the Giants do with Daniel Jones, who signed a four-year, $160 million contract this past offseason? Jones was awful in his appearances in the 2023 season before a season-ending ACL injury was suffered in Week 9.

The Giants cannot move on from him given his contract and the amount of dead money that will be on the books. But, they will have to consider some alternatives and at the very least bring in some competition along with him and undrafted rookie sensation, Tommy DeVito.

NFL News & Rumors: Tee Higgins, Mike Evans, 2024 NFL Free Agency, New York Giants Updates

Another position that the Giants have to figure out is wide receiver. They have a solid enough group of weapons but need that true go-to No. 1 receiver for their quarterback to rely on. Over at Yardbarker, they believe that will come to an end this offseason.

The Yardbarker staff made some predictions for how the 2024 NFL free agency period could go. They have predicted that the Giants will make a splash, signing Cincinnati Bengals star wideout, Tee Higgins.

“They’d love to get Mike Evans out of Tampa Bay, but with roughly $36M in projected cap space for 2024, the Giants probably can’t afford him. With 3,525 career yards, 23 touchdown catches and a more reasonable price tag, the 24-year-old Higgins could do wonders for the NFL’s most inept passing game,” as written over at Yardbarker.

Higgins isn’t having his best season in the NFL, battling injuries and some ineffectiveness overall early on with the Bengals offense. However, he has shown in the past that he is a capable No. 1 receiver, he has just been in the No. 2 role behind Ja’Marr Chase.

NFL News & Rumors: Tee Higgins, Mike Evans, 2024 NFL Free Agency, New York Giants Updates

Standing 6’4” and being listed at 219 pounds, Higgins is the kind of perimeter threat the Giants desperately need. Turning only 25 in January, he could have another level of production to reach as he is still years away from his prime. He is young enough to continue developing and become a foundational piece for the Giants moving forward.

However, it would be a little surprising if he was signed to a deal at a more reasonable price tag than Mike Evans. Evans has an impressive resume, but he will be 31 when the 2024 regular season kicks off. Some teams will be hesitant to sign him to a long-term deal compared to Higgins, who is six years younger.

Given where the Giants are and the direction they should be heading in this offseason, Higgins does make more sense as a long-term fit. Evans is likely seeking out a team closer to contention than New York is, but either player would be a much-needed upgrade for Big Blue.
