Matt LaFleur and the Green Bay Packers’ defense experienced a bit of a reality check on Thursday night, as the Packers suffered a 34-20 loss to the Detroit Lions.

Green Bay surrendered 401 total yards to the Lions, with 211 of them coming on the ground. This came on the heels of a few impressive performances by the Packers’ defense over the first three weeks of the season.

Afterward, head coach Matt LaFleur was not happy with the results of Green Bay’s defense and said that something needed to change, particularly when it came to defending the run.

“We’re gonna have to do something different,” said LaFleur, according to Matt Schneidman of The Athletic. “It’s insane to do the same things over and over again and expect a different result.”

Following the loss to Detroit, the Packers’ run defense now ranks second-to-last in the NFL, allowing 155.3 rushing yards per game. Last year, things weren’t much better for Green Bay in that category, as it ranked 26th in the league in guarding against the run.

The Packers had gotten off to an impressive 2-1 start this season under the direction of young quarterback Jordan Love, putting together wins over the Chicago Bears and the New Orleans Saints. In the latter victory, Green Bay rallied from a 17-0 fourth-quarter deficit for an 18-17 triumph.

LaFleur’s club entered Thursday night’s divisional matchup tied with the Lions for first place in the NFC North and had a chance to make an early-season statement at Lambeau Field. Instead, the Packers were never all that competitive and ultimately fell flat in what could be described as their first real test of the 2023 campaign.

The good news for Green Bay is that there is still plenty of time for the team to right the ship, and it starts next Monday when it heads out west to take on the Las Vegas Raiders.
