For the first time since the early 1990s, the Green Bay Packers, one of the NFL’s most iconic franchises, is starting from scratch, as it is the first time since 1991 they haven’t had a Hall of Fame quarterback on their roster.
For all these years, cheeseheads have been used to seeing either Brett Favre or Aaron Rodgers under center, but now Jordan Love is at the controls, and at least so far, he hasn’t measured up. Through five games, he has completed only 55.6 percent of his pass attempts and thrown for eight touchdowns and six interceptions, and he’s coming off a loss to the Raiders in Week 5 in which he threw three interceptions.
The Packers have an utter lack of firepower at the wide receiver position, and looking to the trade market for some help could help speed up Love’s development a bit while giving him some support.
The Denver Broncos’ Jerry Jeudy has been heavily discussed in trade rumors, mainly because his team is 1-5. Clark Dalton of Yard Barker suggests the 2-3 Packers could acquire Jeudy for a reasonable price.
“Bill Barnwell of ESPN recently suggested Denver should trade the 24-year-old and a 2024 fourth-rounder to the Green Bay Packers for a 2024 second-rounder and WR Romeo Doubs,” wrote Dalton. “The move makes sense for both teams. The Broncos (1-5) need more draft capital to rebuild, and the Packers offense — 21st in the NFL in passing yards (200 YPG) — needs more reliable targets.”
Jeudy collected 67 receptions for 972 yards and six touchdowns last season, and he’s at 20 catches for 222 yards so far this season. Given the structural problems the Broncos seem to have, perhaps a change in scenery, especially if he joins a team such as the Packers that has no real expectations, could result in a boost in the 24-year-old’s production.
Doubs has 228 yards and three touchdowns in 2023, but Jerry Jeudy seems to clearly have more potential than him. Perhaps the Packers wouldn’t want to part with a second-round pick, but they will have a second-round pick coming in April from the New York Jets in the trade that sent Rodgers there.
It’s time for Green Bay to build for the future and make Love’s development its top priority, if it isn’t already, even if it means giving up some draft capital to ensure he will become the best QB he can possibly be.
