Hints Dropped That Broncos Could Still Dump Russell Wilson

Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson has actually been playing some good football this season in spite of the Broncos’ struggles as a team overall.

However, that does not mean Denver is committed to him long term.

Parker Gabriel of The Denver Post says that regardless of how well Wilson has played, there is an “action point” coming with him sooner rather than later.

The Broncos initially acquired Wilson in a blockbuster trade with the Seattle Seahawks in March 2022, sending a wealth of draft picks the Seahawks’ way in exchange for the nine-time Pro Bowler.

Denver was hoping that Wilson would transform the franchise and bring it back to its glory days, but that has not exactly happened.

The Broncos went just 6-11 in Wilson’s first season under center as he labored through the worst season of his NFL career, throwing for 3,524 yards, 16 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while completing 60.5 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 84.4.

Wilson has rebounded nicely this season, totaling 1,613 yards, 16 touchdowns and four picks while completing 66.1 percent of his throws and registering a passer rating of 101.7, but in spite of that, Denver is still only 3-5. Plus, while Wilson’s numbers look good as a whole in 2023, he has put forth some rather shaky performances, like when he went 13-for-22 with 95 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions in a loss to the Kansas City Chiefs several weeks ago.

The true sticking point with Wilson is his contract, as the Broncos handed him a massive five-year, $245 million extension upon trading for him.

For that reason, Russell Wilson probably has negative trade value at this point, or at least very little. Denver may be left with no choice but to cut him this offseason.
