The Houston Texans are acquiring running back Joe Mixon in a trade with the Cincinnati Bengals, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

It had previously been reported that the Bengals were releasing Mixon after signing Zack Moss in free agency, but apparently, they were able to swing a deal for him.

The Texans lost Devin Singletary to the New York Giants on Monday, so they are replacing him with Mixon. They were rumored to be interested in star halfbacks Saquon Barkley and Josh Jacobs, but both players ultimately signed elsewhere.

Mixon is coming off of a 2023 campaign in which he rushed for 1,034 yards and nine touchdowns while averaging a pedestrian four yards per carry. He added 52 catches for 376 yards and three scores.

The 27-year-old, who played his collegiate football at the University of Oklahoma, was selected by Cincinnati in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

After a solid rookie season, Mixon broke out in 2018, racking up 1,168 yards and eight scores while logging a robust 4.9 yards per attempt in what was, by far, the best year of his career. He also caught 43 passes for 296 yards and a touchdown.

Since then, Mixon has posted three more 1,000-yard campaigns, including 2021 when he rattled off 1,205 yards and 13 touchdowns en route to his one and only Pro Bowl appearance.

However, it has largely been on volume, as Mixon has not averaged any more than 4.1 yards per tote over the last five seasons. He has posted under four yards per carry twice during that span, and he has recorded just 4.1 yards per attempt over the course of his NFL tenure.

Mixon will join a Houston backfield that already includes Dameon Pierce, who lost his starting job to Singletary midway through 2023.

We’ll see what type of role Joe Mixon carves out with the Texans next season.
