The Houston Texans have emerged as surprise contenders over the first quarter of the 2023 NFL campaign behind some inspiring play from rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud. Going out and getting more weapons for Stroud could be a priority. A trade for Denver Broncos wideout Courtland Sutton could make sense.
The Texans have won three of their last four games to push their record to 3-3 and move to within one game behind the Jacksonville Jaguars for first place in the AFC South.
Still, in spite of Houston’s shocking early success, the club could still stand to add some more pieces in order to solidify itself as a legitimate playoff threat.
Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports feels that the Texans should make a play for Broncos wide receiver Courtland Sutton, who appears to be a prime trade candidate with the Oct. 31 deadline looming.
Benjamin suggests that Houston trade a 2024 third-round draft pick to the Broncos in exchange for Sutton, who would represent another key piece in what is already a very solid receiving corps.
The Texans already employ Nico Collins, Tank Dell and Robert Woods in their impressive stable of wide outs, but Dell missed Week 6 with a head injury, and his status for Week 8 is in question (the club has a Week 7 bye).
Houston could bring in Sutton to soften the blow of the potential loss of Dell, and then once Dell returns, the Texans would own one of the deepest groups of receivers in football.
Sutton has logged 25 catches for 274 yards and four touchdowns this season. The issue is that he is under contract through 2025 and is making a rather substantial base salary, so whether or not Houston would want to absorb that money remains to be seen.
Denver is just 1-5 and are going nowhere fast, and all indications are that the Broncos will be attempting to move Courtland Sutton and other pieces over the next couple of weeks.
The Texans will take on the Carolina Panthers when they retake the field on Oct. 29.
