The New York Giants are currently in a tough spot with running back Saquon Barkley. So are the Indianapolis Colts with Jonathan Taylor.
The Giants were unable to reach a long-term agreement prior to the season, with New York ultimately giving Barkley a one-year deal worth up to $11 million.
Barkley is set to be a free agent in the spring, and based on the trajectory recent events, it does not appear New York is likely to pay him what he wants.
Plus, Barkley, who has been injury-prone throughout his career, is currently dealing with an ankle injury that sidelined him in Week 3. Another injury in what has been a career full of them is not exactly going to make the Giants eager to re-sign the star halfback.
Could Big Blue end up trading Barkley if things continue going south for the 1-2 club?
Bleacher Report’s Alex Ballentine thinks it’s a possibility, calling it a “nuclear option” for New York.
Here is an interesting thought: perhaps the Giants and Colts could swap running backs?
The Colts are embroiled in a contract dispute with Jonathan Taylor, who is currently on the PUP list and is eligible to return in Week 5. Taylor seems to have no interest in playing for Indianapolis again, meaning the team may very well have to move him ahead of the Oct. 31 NFL trade deadline.
What if the Giants offered Barkley and a 2024 fourth-round draft pick to the Colts in exchange for Taylor?
Indianapolis doesn’t want to pay Taylor, so it surely won’t want to pay Saquon Barkley, who is two years older. However, the Colts are contending for an AFC South division title at the moment, and Barkley would at least play for them. Plus, they would reap a fourth-round pick in the deal, as well.
Meanwhile, New York would land a 24-year-old star who the Giants may be more willing to pay in the offseason given his youth.
It’s a wild idea, but it oddly makes sense for both sides.
