The Cleveland Browns had some major holes on their defense that needed addressing this offseason. Finding some more support for Myles Garrett along the defensive line was a must. He continued producing for Cleveland in 2022, but it was a one-man show at times as no one else stepped up.
The interior of their defensive line was especially poor. They began the transformation of that position in free agency, landing defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson, who spent the last two seasons with the Minnesota Vikings.
Alas, Tomlinson isn’t much of a pass rusher. His career-high for sacks in a season is 3.5, which he has done twice. In his career, he has only 13 sacks in 93 games. The 2023 NFL Draft will provide the Browns a chance to seek out someone with some more pass-rushing upside.
Unfortunately, Cleveland won’t be on the clock until pick No. 74. That stems from trades they have made acquiring Deshaun Watson from the Houston Texans and Elijah Moore from the New York Jets.
But, there are still a few prospects that should catch their attention late in Day 2. One of the players to keep an eye on is Jaquelin Roy out of LSU. Interestingly enough, the player comp that Roy received was Tomlinson, but his ceiling as a pass rusher is much higher than the newest Brown addition.
He may not have produced gaudy pass-rushing numbers at LSU, but he has the prototypical frame, athleticism and excellent tools to develop into one. The issues he needs help overcoming as a pass rusher are easily fixable with coaching.
Another player to watch for is Keondre Coburn. Coburn is more of a two-down nose tackle that excels at being a spacer eater in the running game. But, he is sneaky athletic, which does lead to some success as a pass rusher.
You will never question his effort level and motor for Coburn, which is something coaches will love. While he may never turn into a true three-down defensive tackle, he would be a useful rotation piece at the very least to get the job done on early downs.
