Trevor Lawrence became eligible for a contract extension this offseason, but the Jacksonville Jaguars don’t seem to be in any hurry to give him one. At least not right now.

Lawrence acknowledged that he has had talks with the Jaguars about a potential deal but that it is not his top priority at the moment.

“There’s definitely been some conversations as far as where that’s at now,” Lawrence said, via Grant Gordon of NFL.com. “It’s not really my focus, I’d love to obviously be a Jag for as long as possible. We love it here and I love where we’re headed as an organization and feel like I’m just getting better. My best ball is definitely ahead of me. From that standpoint, obviously yeah, that would be great. But like I said, going into my fourth year, it’s not like this is necessarily going to be my last season.”

The 24-year-old is coming off of a rather disappointing 2023 campaign in which he threw for 4,016 yards, 21 touchdowns and 14 interceptions while completing 65.6 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 88.5, which may have given Jacksonville some pause about handing in a massive contract just yet.

That came after a spectacular sophomore season in which Lawrence totaled 4,113 yards, 25 touchdowns and eight picks while completing 66.3 percent of his throws and registering a 95.2 passer rating en route to leading the Jags to an AFC South division title and a thrilling comeback Wild Card Round playoff win over the Los Angeles Chargers.

Lawrence obviously took a bit of a step back this past year, but the No. 1 overall pick from 2021 is looking to improve regardless of whether or not he gets paid.

“It’s not really my focus right now. At the end of the day, my job isn’t going to change whether I get extended or not before this season,” he said. “My job is to go win games and to be the best I can be for this team so we can have a chance to win the Super Bowl. Even if I get the contract extension, that’s still my job even more so, there’s even more expectation and pressure on that. For me, I have the same focus and the same mindset.”

The Jaguars begin 2023 with a record of 8-3, but sputtered down the stretch to finish just 9-8. They ended up missing the playoffs.

We’ll see if Trevor Lawrence can bounce back in 2024.
