The Minnesota Vikings have scheduled a private meeting with LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels ahead of the NFL Draft, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL media.
Given that the Vikings own the 11th and 23rd picks and that Daniels is expected to go in the top five, this is another indication that Minnesota plans on trading up.
The Vikings acquired the 23rd selection in a trade with the Houston Texans earlier this offseason, and the general consensus all along has been that Minnesota may try to package both of its first-rounders in order to move up and select a quarterback.
Four quarterbacks are expected to be off the board in the top five picks.
The Vikings lost Kirk Cousins to the Atlanta Falcons in free agency, opening up a huge hole under center. They did sign Sam Darnold, but he is nothing more than a capable backup or a bridge starter.
More than likely, Minnesota will be drafting a signal-caller, and apparently, it feels it can get high enough in the draft order to select Daniels.
Daniels is coming off of a fantastic 2023 campaign in which he threw for 3,812 yards, 40 touchdowns and four interceptions while completing 72.2 percent of his passes. He also racked up 1,134 yards and 10 scores on the ground, averaging a robust 8.4 yards per carry. He won the Heisman Trophy for his efforts.
The 23-year-old is widely regarded as one of the top three quarterback prospects in this year’s draft class, with many placing him No. 2 behind USC’s Caleb Williams.
We’ll see if the Vikings are able to wheel and deal to land Jayden Daniels later this month.
