The New York Jets made a surprising decision to retain almost all of their coaching staff this offseason. Given how much of a struggle the 2023 season was, it certainly was interesting that no major changes were being made.
Head coach Robert Saleh, all of his coordinators and general manager Joe Douglas would all be back. The injury to Aaron Rodgers seemingly provided everyone with a pass for the 2023 season and a redo in 2024.
However, there were still a few changes made to the coaching staff. One of the moves was hiring Tony Dews to be their new running back coach. Dews has been with the Tennessee Titans since 2018, holding their running backs coach position from 2018-2022 before taking over as tight ends coach in 2023.
With head coach Mike Vrabel being fired this offseason, Dews was not retained and was looking for employment elsewhere. He landed with the Jets a few days ago, which has fans immediately connecting dots hoping it results in the addition of Derrick Henry to Gang Green.

A one-two punch of Henry with Breece Hall would certainly be something for fans to get excited about. Henry showed this season that he can still get the job done in spurts even if he cannot be relied upon to carry the backfield for 25+ touches every week.
A complementary piece to Hall in the backfield is something the Jets were lacking this season. Dalvin Cook’s signing ended up being a disastrous one, as he didn’t provide the team with much production in 2023. Rookie Israel Abanikanda failed to establish himself either, leaving Hall on an island in the backfield at some points.
Dews taking over as running backs coach in Tennessee did coincide with Henry’s ascension to stardom. Reuniting with the Jets is certainly something that will be discussed this offseason, especially if Henry is willing to take a discount to chase a ring and play alongside Aaron Rodgers.
