Jets Could Bring In Yet Another Friend Of QB Aaron Rodgers

The New York Jets made a lot of decisions during the 2023 offseason in part to appease quarterback Aaron Rodgers. While some of the moves were made before Rodgers’ being acquired, virtually everything they did was to make him as comfortable as possible in New York.

Most of those additions were not helpful. Wide receivers Allen Lazard and Randall Cobb were two of the least effective players at the position in the NFL during the 2023 regular season. Lazard was a healthy scratch multiple times.

He signed a four-year, $44 million deal in free agency and all the Jets got out of it in Year 1 was 23 receptions for 311 yards and one touchdown, all career lows outside of his rookie season when he appeared in one game. It would not be surprising if New York added to their wide receiver room this offseason.

The hiring of offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett left much to be desired as well. Hackett was the offensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers when Rodgers won the MVP award in 2020 and 2021, but he struggled to get the Jets’ offense going. His quotes about running back Breece Hall, not realizing how good of a pass catcher he was, tell you all you need to know about his capabilities.

To the dismay of many fans, the Jets aren’t planning on making major changes to their coaching staff. All three coordinators, as of now, will be returning. However, could another friend of Rodgers be added to the offensive staff?

The Bears announced head coach Matt Eberflus would be back for the 2024 season, but his staff will change. Offensive coordinator Luke Getsy was fired as part of the shake-up up and he was immediately connected to the Jets.

“Aaron Rodgers on Getsy in 2022: ‘A close friend. A guy who was a confidant. We had a lot of long conversations after the day had been done. Good hangouts outside the facility … he’s just a great human being. Great husband, father, phenomenal coach. He’s fun in the room … I loved our constant dialogue during the weeks and loved being coached by him.’ Just saying,” shared Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic on X, formerly Twitter.

Gesy and Rodgers were both members of the Green Bay Packers from 2014-2021. Getsy was the quarterbacks coach from 2019-2021, where he developed a close relationship with the future Hall of Famer.

Based on how things went in 2023, Jets fans are probably over bringing in any more of Rodgers’ buddies from his time with the Packers. Getsy did show improvement in his second season with the Bears as offensive coordinator, but if you ask fans of their team to assess his job, they are likely happy he is being moved on from.
