Coming into the 2024 NFL offseason, the needs for the New York Jets were clear. Owner Woody Johnson laid out exactly what he wanted to see, as he believed a backup quarterback was the team’s biggest need.

Johnson was not happy with the plan that was put in place behind Aaron Rodgers during the 2023 season. There was no contingency in case something happened to the future Hall of Famer and the Jets found out the hard way how detrimental that was.

Rodgers was injured on the team’s first possession of the season, hurting his Achilles and not getting back on the field. Zach Wilson, Tim Boyle and Trevor Siemian all played after that and the results were as disastrous as you would expect.

Not looking to repeat that mistake, general manager Joe Douglas made a splash on the free-agent quarterback market. According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the team has agreed to terms with Tyrod Taylor.

Taylor, who spent the last two seasons with the New York Giants, is a massive upgrade over Wilson, Boyle and Siemian. The Jets are investing heavily in him, as the sides agreed to a two-year deal worth up to $18 million.

Taylor brings a wealth of experience to the table, as the Jets have to much more comfortable with their quarterback situation already. A 13-year veteran with one Pro Bowl appearance under his belt, Taylor is a strong backup quarterback to have in the mix.

Last season with the Giants, despite all of their shortcomings, Taylor was able to find some success. He completed 64.4 percent of his passes for 1,341 yards, going 2-3 as a starter. He will run the offense how it is supposed to be run and is willing to take shots down the field to keep a defense honest.

He brings another dimension to the offense when he is in the lineup as Taylor is a capable runner as well. Last season, he averaged 5.2 yards per carry and for his career, he has averaged 5.6.
