The New York Jets knew winning games without Aaron Rodgers as their quarterback would be difficult this season. They have an all-world defense that would keep them in games, but Week 9 against the Los Angeles Chargers was their worst nightmare coming to life.
The Chargers have an excellent offense led by quarterback Justin Herbert. He is surrounded by great weapons such as running back Austin Ekeler and wide receivers Keenan Allen and Joshua Palmer. Alas, it didn’t matter what they did as the Jets’ defense shut them down on Monday Night Football.
Herbert had the least productive game of his career, throwing for only 136 yards and completing 53.33 percent of his passes. He was sacked five times, throwing for a net total of 107 yards. The Chargers got nothing going on the ground either, gaining 84 yards in 21 carries.
Shockingly, that was more than enough for them to pick up a blowout victory on the road over the Jets. Los Angeles won the game 27-6, as New York made some brutal NFL history in the process.
According to OptaSTATS on X, formerly known as Twitter, the Jets are the first team in NFL history to lose a game by 20+ points with that dominant of defensive effort. They collected five sacks, allowed under 200 total yards and didn’t allow a single 25+ yard play yet still lost by 20+ points.
The same issues that plagued the Jets last season are plaguing them again this season. They have an excellent defense in place that can slow down even the most explosive offensive units, but their own offense is truly abysmal.
Zach Wilson is proving time and time again that he isn’t an NFL-caliber quarterback, as he fumbled three times, losing two of them, which put the team in a big early hole. The Jets are not equipped to come back from such a performance and it led to a brutal loss.
