Not much has gone right for the New York Jets this season. However, arguably the biggest weakness throughout the 2023 season has been the performance of the team’s offensive line.

Some of that is due to things outside of the team’s control. Injuries to Alijah Vera-Tucker and Duane Brown hindered what was already a shaky group. The Jets have been starting backups and practice squad players, leading to disastrous results on the field.

There is only so much a team can do when faced with that many injuries. But, some blame can also be placed on the coaching staff for being unable to develop a player, such as offensive tackle Mekhi Becton.

NFL News & Rumors: Mekhi Becton & New York Jets Updates

Becton has had his shortcomings when it comes to injuries as well. After playing in 14 games in his rookie season, he appeared in only one the following two seasons, missing the entire 2022 campaign because of injury. In 2023, Becton has been able to stay healthy, appearing in and starting 13 games.

Unfortunately for the Jets, his ability to stay on the field has not translated to success. According to Harrison Glaser, a Jets writer and content creator, Becton has allowed 11 sacks during the 2023 season. Per Connor Hughes of SNY.tv, that is the most in the entire NFL a single player has allowed.

The numbers certainly back up the fact that Becton has struggled when on the field this season. According to PFF, his overall grade of 57.9 ranks 60th out of 82 qualified players. He has a pass-blocking grade of 67.1 and a run-blocking grade of 51.8.

NFL News & Rumors: Mekhi Becton & New York Jets Updates

The No. 11 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft out of Louisville is oozing with potential. He had major success as a rookie and looked like a franchise cornerstone, but he has been unable to repeat that level of production, with injuries playing a major part.

Becton is likely gone this offseason as the Jets declined the fifth-year option on his rookie contract earlier this year. A change of scenery could do him some good as another team may be able to help get him on track.
