The New York Jets are a team that a lot of people will be keeping an eye on in the coming weeks. The 2023 season has been a disaster as their plans of having Aaron Rodgers lead them to the promised land lasted four offensive snaps.
Without him in the lineup, things went as poorly as expected. The Jets turned to Zach Wilson, Tim Boyle and Trevor Siemian to replace him and all have struggled to perform. It doesn’t help that the offensive line has been in shambles all season because of injuries.
However, despite those issues, attention has been brought to head coach Robert Saleh and whether or not he is the guy for the job. Many have assumed everyone would get a pass for the 2023 season because of the Rodgers injury, but it is fair to question whether some people, such as Saleh, deserve that.
NFL News & Rumors: Robert Saleh, Mike Tomlin, New York Jets Updates
During his tenure as head coach, Saleh has suffered numerous embarrassing losses. The Jets, despite having an elite defense, have suffered the most blowout losses in the NFL this season. When taking into consideration how bad other offenses are and the injuries other teams have endured, that is an indictment on Saleh as head coach.
If the Jets are going to make a move, there has to be an option available that the team is confident will be an upgrade. In the opinion of ESPN radio host Jake Asman, that person should be Mike Tomlin, the current head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Should the Steelers part ways with Tomlin, Asman believes the Jets should make him their No. 1 priority.
“If Tomlin is available, Woody Johnson needs to write a blank check. Plus, he has a strong relationship with Aaron Rodgers according to Rodgers himself so he would be on board,” wrote Asman.
There is no guarantee that Tomlin will be made available this season as the Steelers are still fighting for a playoff spot. But, based on how the last few weeks have gone, such a drastic move could be on the table as Pittsburgh could look to wipe the slate clean and start over.
NFL News & Rumors: Robert Saleh, Mike Tomlin, New York Jets Updates
If the Steelers do move on from Tomlin, he will be atop the wish list for many teams around the NFL. He is an established head coach with a Super Bowl victory on his resume. In Year 17 with in Pittsburgh, he has yet to have a season under .500, a record to begin a head coaching career.
Parting ways with someone like that certainly wouldn’t be easy, but all good things must come to an end eventually. If that move is made, Asman is correct in saying the Jets should pursue him aggressively as he is the kind of established head coach that could turn some of their shortcomings under Saleh around instantly.
