The New York Jets are weighing the possibility of drafting a developmental quarterback in the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft, and one name emerging as a potential fit is Sam Hartman.

According to ESPN NFL Draft analysts Matt Miller and Jordan Reid, Hartman could find himself landing with the Jets. Miller projected the Notre Dame quarterback as a seventh-round pick for the team, envisioning him as a solid backup option with the potential for a lasting NFL career.

“Hartman showed the accuracy, touch and ball placement to be a quality backup in a West Coast system such as the one Nathaniel Hackett runs for the Jets,” Miller wrote. “Considering that Aaron Rodgers is 40 years old and the team was last in QBR last season (23.4) without him, adding to the QB room on Day 3 is logical for New York.”

While not the most dazzling prospect on the board, Hartman’s journey speaks to his potential. A 3-star high school quarterback from South Carolina in 2018, he received minimal attention from college programs, with only Wake Forest, Charlotte, and Elon showing interest.

However, his commitment to Wake Forest proved to be a game-changer. Over his college career, he earned two All-ACC selections, showcasing his talent, particularly in 2021 when he guided his team to an impressive 11-3 record with 39 passing touchdowns.

Opting for a larger stage, Hartman transferred to Notre Dame ahead of the 2023 season. Despite the transition, he led the Fighting Irish to a commendable 9-3 record, tallying 2,689 passing yards, 24 touchdowns, and eight interceptions.

Standing at 6’1″ and 211 pounds, Hartman possesses a slightly shorter stature compared to other quarterback prospects. Nevertheless, his solid build and quick decision-making abilities are notable strengths. Yet, inconsistencies in his mechanics and a tendency towards risky plays result in occasional inaccuracies and turnovers.

With 57 college starts under his belt, Hartman brings a wealth of experience to the table, potentially easing his transition to the professional level.

While the New York Jets’ decision to draft Hartman is not set in stone, it presents a logical move. Given Aaron Rodgers’ advancing age, Hartman could emerge as a viable option for the team’s future, provided he undergoes promising development.
