NFL Scout Doesn’t Believe Bears’ Future QB Caleb Williams Is Elite

The Chicago Bears will almost certainly be taking USC quarterback Caleb Williams with the No. 1 overall pick of the NFL Draft later this month.

Some view Williams as a generational talent. Others merely think he will just be very good. Then you have another faction that isn’t too sure about Williams at all.

An NFL scout tells the NFL Analysis Network that while he likes Williams, he doesn’t think he will be the future Hall-of-Famer signal-caller that some are projecting.

“Let me preface this by saying, I don’t think Caleb Williams is going to be a bad NFL quarterback,” the scout said. “I think he’s going to have a solid career. But, I don’t think he’s a special talent. Chicago will have a long-term quarterback in Williams, but he isn’t going to be a superstar.”

Williams actually began his collegiate career at the University of Oklahoma, throwing for 1,912 yards, 21 touchdowns and four interceptions while completing 64.5 percent of his passes for the Sooners during his freshman year before transferring to USC.

In his debut campaign with the Trojans, Williams totaled 4,537 yards, 42 touchdowns and five picks while completing 66.6 percent of his throws in what was a scintillating sophomore season. He also punched in 10 rushing scores on top of that.

Then, this past year, the 22-year-old registered 3,633 yards, 30 touchdowns and five interceptions, completing 68.6 percent of his passes. He also reached the end zone 11 times as a rusher.

Even if Williams only turns out to be a decent NFL quarterback, that would still be a major boon for the Bears, whose best signal-caller over the last few decades was probably Jay Cutler.

Williams will also have some impressive weapons at his disposal heading into his rookie year in Chicago, as the Bears recently acquired wide receiver Keenan Allen to put alongside of DJ Moore. They also signed running back D’Andre Swift in free agency, and Cole Kmet is an up-and-comer at tight end.

We’ll see what type of debut campaign Caleb Williams has in the Windy City in 2024.
