Jets’ Robert Saleh Contemplating Another Quarterback Change

The Tim Boyle experience for the New York Jets could be coming to an end before it really even got going. Boyle was announced as the team’s starting quarterback ahead of their Black Friday matchup against the Miami Dolphins in Week 12, replacing the ineffective Zach Wilson.

Somehow, things have gotten worse with Boyle under center. The Jets have scored only one touchdown in the 18 drives that he has been on the field for. In Week 13 against the Atlanta Falcons, he was benched in favor of veteran Trevor Siemian, who wasn’t much better, in the fourth quarter.

There is no correct answer for the starting quarterback position currently on the roster with Aaron Rodgers injured. But, head coach Robert Saleh is contemplating yet another change watching the effectiveness of Boyle, who started in the team’s fifth straight defeat.

“I’m not there yet with regard to next week,” Saleh said of his quarterback decision, which has no good answer. Wilson was benched for his poor level of play, but Boyle and Siemian have shown just as little, if not less in some regard.

Sunday afternoon was Siemian’s debut in the season and it was underwhelming. He completed 5-of-13 passes for 66 yards and failed to generate any points. The Jets were gifted a drive starting on the Falcons’ 48-yard line with Siemian at the helm and did not score.

The offensive line remains a major issue, as Siemian was under siege his entire time on the field. In four possessions he was sacked three times and fumbled three times, losing one of them.

He could very easily be who the Jets turn to in Week 14 against the Houston Texans. Saleh was not pleased with how Boyle played against the Falcons, as he missed open receivers downfield and was responsible for some false start penalties. The Jets were whistled for four, which Saleh attributed to Boyle getting “too cute” with his cadence.

Saleh did not shut down the idea of going back to Wilson, the team’s original replacement for Rodgers. “He’s always in consideration,” Saleh said of Wilson. “To what level, I’m not there yet.”

Don’t expect Rodgers to walk through that door and save the day either. Despite what was considered a good week of practice heading into Week 13, he doesn’t sound like an option Saleh is legitimately considering as the starter. Their plans for him, whatever they may be, remain unchanged.

“No, our plan for Aaron is consistent,” the coach said. “He’s in rehab. That’s all he’s doing.”

At 4-8 with their season spiraling down the drain for a second straight year because of inept quarterback performance, there isn’t much for the Jets to do. They dug themselves into this hole by not having a good contingency plan behind Rodgers coming into the season and are now facing the repercussions of that decision.
