The New York Jets found themselves in a bunch of headlines last week but for a peculiar reason. It wasn’t anything that someone within their organization did, but instead because of Denver Broncos head coach, Sean Payton.

Payton did an interview with USA Today that was recently published. Among the numerous topics he discussed were the Jets, more specifically, offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett. Hackett was in the crosshairs of Payton because of the job he did as Broncos head coach for one season in 2022.

Hackett lasted one season at the helm, going 5-12 and overseeing one of the least productive offenses in the NFL. Payton said it was one of the worst coaching jobs he has ever seen and claims the interview was done so that he could go to bat for his players.

It had drawn a lot of reaction from the football world and people within the Jets. The latest person to speak about it is wide receiver, Randall Cobb. He had some strong words about Payton while making an appearance on The Michael Kay Show on 98.7 FM ESPN Radio in New York.

Cobb referred to Payton as “Bountygate Coach” throughout the interview, taking shots at Payton for his time with the New Orleans Saints.

“Am I surprised? No, not in this day and age,” Cobb said when asked if he was taken aback by Payton’s comments. “As a man, I think it’s pretty soft. Think he’s trying to soften the blow.

Cobb isn’t the first Jets player to stand up for Hackett. Aaron Rodgers also had some words about Payton; both he and Cobb spent time previously playing under Hackett when he was offensive coordinator of the Green Bay Packers. Jets’ head coach Robert Saleh let his opinion be known as well.

A Week 5 matchup doesn’t normally garner too much attention, but this year, it will be a date many people have circled on their calendars. That is when the Jets and Broncos are set to square off and you know both teams are going to be ready to go for that one.
