Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes Speaks Out On Exchange With Bills’ Josh Allen

Following the Kansas City Chiefs‘ tough loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes had an unfortunate postgame exchange with Bills quarterback Josh Allen.

Still fuming about an offensive offsides penalty that erased what would have been a go-ahead touchdown late in the fourth quarter, Mahomes complained about the call to Allen in their on-field postgame handshake instead of giving the usual platitudes that signal-callers tend to do after a close contest.

During an appearance on 610 Sports Radio this week, Mahomes spoke about the incident.

“Obviously you don’t react that way,” Mahomes said. “I mean I care, man. I love it, I love this game, I love my teammates and I want to go out there and put everything on the line to win. But obviously, can’t do that. Can’t be that way towards officials or really anybody in life.”

Mahomes was heavily criticized following the event, and after having some time to think with a clear head, he regretted his actions.

“Probably regret acting like that, but more than anything, I regret the way I acted toward Josh after the game because he had nothing to do with it,” he said. “I was still hot and emotional, but you can’t do that, man. It’s not a great example for kids watching the game. I was more upset about that than I was about me on the sideline.”

Patrick Mahomes went 25-for-43 with 271 yards, a touchdown and an interception in the 20-17 loss. It was just the latest suboptimal performance for the two-time MVP, who has clearly not been himself this season.

The Chiefs have now lost four of their last six games to fall to 8-5 on the year. They have failed to crack 20 points in each of their last four defeats.

Kansas City still sits in first place in the AFC West, but earning home-field advantage in the playoffs may be a pipe dream at this point.

The Chiefs will try to right the ship when they take on the New England Patriots next Sunday. They will then battle the Las Vegas Raiders, Cincinnati Bengals and Los Angeles Chargers to close out the regular season.
