Kansas City Chiefs defensive end Charles Omenihu will miss the Super Bowl due to a torn ACL, according to multiple reports (via Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk).

Omenihu suffered the injury during the Chiefs’ win over the Baltimore Ravens during the AFC Championship Game.

The pass rusher thought he would be able to return for the Super Bowl against his former San Francisco 49ers club on Feb. 11, but tests revealed that the injury was more severe than he initially anticipated.

Omenihu was a critical part of Kansas City’s pass rush this season, as he finished third on the team with seven sacks to go along with 28 tackles and a couple of forced fumbles in 11 games.

The 26-year-old, who played his collegiate football at the University of Texas, was originally selected by the Houston Texans in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL Draft.

He spent the first two-and-a-half years of his career with the Texans and made a limited impact, amassing a grand total of of seven sacks during his time with the club.

Houston traded Omenihu to the 49ers midway through the 2021 campaign, but he logged just nine tackles without a sack in nine games with San Francisco that season.

Last year, Omenihu played in every game for the Niners, finishing with 20 tackles and 4.5 sacks.

He proceeded to sign with the Chiefs last March but was suspended for the first six games of this season as a result of violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy.

The Houston native experienced what could be described as a breakout campaign this year, but he unfortunately won’t get to enjoy the fruits of his labor in the Super Bowl.
