Going into Week 3, trade rumors were swirling around Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins. Then, the Vikings lost to the Los Angeles Chargers by a score of 28-24 to drop to 0-3 on the year, making the Cousins trade chatter hotter than it has ever been.
While the New York Jets have long been mentioned as the most likely landing spot in the event of a Cousins trade, Mark Powell of FanSided has proposed another potential destination.
The Las Vegas Raiders.
On the surface, it sounds odd, given that the Raiders signed Jimmy Garoppolo to a three-year deal back in March. However, the early returns on Garoppolo have not been too good, as he has thrown five touchdowns and a league-leading six interceptions through the first three weeks of the season.
What’s more, Garoppolo is now in concussion protocol following Las Vegas’ Sunday night loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, putting his status for his team’s Week 4 matchup with the Los Angeles Chargers in question.
Plus, Raiders wide receiver Davante Adams expressed some frustration after the Week 3 loss, stating that he doesn’t have time to to wait.
For those reasons, Las Vegas may want to act now and address its unsettling situation under center.
Cousins definitely makes sense in that regard, as he is in the final year of his deal and the Raiders would have no obligation to him beyond this season. Plus, Cousins has looked a heck of a lot better than Garoppolo, leading the NFL in completions, passing yards and touchdowns thus far in 2023.
In spite of Las Vegas’ rough 1-2 start, it is just one game behind the Kansas City Chiefs for first place in the AFC West, and with each conference now having three Wild Card spots, the Raiders are hardly out of playoff contention just yet.
Upgrading from Garoppolo to Kirk Cousins could be exactly what the doctor ordered for Las Vegas to go on a run (or at least be more competitive).
