The Las Vegas Raiders cleaned house on Tuesday night, firing head coach Josh McDaniels and general manager Dave Ziegler from their posts.
When speaking about his decision to let both McDaniels and Ziegler go, Raiders owner Mark Davis said he didn’t like the path of the team.
“Unfortunately, I had great hopes for Josh and Dave,” Davis said, according to Paul Gutierrez of ESPN. “It just seemed we were going in the wrong direction. So, with the trade deadline, I just felt it was time to make a change, time to make a move.”
Las Vegas has gotten off to a 3-5 start this season and suffered a listless 26-14 loss to the Detroit Lions on national television this past Monday.
It marked a rather continuous trend for the Raiders under McDaniels, as they went just 9-16 under his direction since he took over as head coach in 2022. Ziegler became general manager the same year.
While McDaniels has been a very effective offensive coordinator, he has not exactly had a great run of success as an NFL head coach. He spent parts of two seasons at the helm for the Denver Broncos back in 2009 and 2010 and went 11-17 overall before being fired after starting 3-9 in the latter year.
Davis chose to replace McDaniels with Antonio Pierce, who had been serving as the team’s linebackers coach for the same period of time.
“Seemed like a fresh approach,” Davis said of Pierce. “Seemed like the adjustment we need at this time. I was impressed.”
Pierce is most known for his time as a linebacker for the New York Giants between 2005 and 2009, helping the Giants win a Super Bowl during the 2007-08 campaign.
“I felt good about it. I felt good about him,” Davis added.
Speaking of the Giants, the new-look Raiders will battle New York this Sunday.
