Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo entered concussion protocol following his team’s loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers last Sunday, which left his status for the Raiders’ Week 4 matchup with the Los Angeles Chargers in question.
However, Las Vegas may now be getting some clarity on Garoppolo’s availability.
According to Vincent Bonsignore of The Las Vegas Review-Journal, Garoppolo was back at practice on Thursday, an indication he is making progress toward playing on Sunday.
Garoppolo went 28-for-44 with 324 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions during the 23-18 defeat against the Steelers.
The Raiders signed Garoppolo to a three-year, $72.5 million contract this past offseason after parting ways with long-time signal-caller Derek Carr.
The early returns on Garoppolo have not been great.
Through three games, the 31-year-old has thrown for 709 yards, five touchdowns and a league-worst six interceptions while completing 68.1 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 81.4.
Many were wondering if Las Vegas would trot out rookie quarterback Aidan O’Connell against the Chargers. O’Connell was very impressive in the preseason and had some believing that he could eventually supplant Garoppolo under center.
That being said, with the money that the Raiders are paying Garoppolo, it’s hard to imagine them moving away from him as the starter that quickly.
Jimmy Garoppolo spent the first three seasons of his NFL career as Tom Brady‘s backup in New England before being traded to the San Francisco 49ers in 2017. He spent six years with the 49ers, taking the team to a Super Bowl in his third season there.
The Raiders are 1-2 thus far on the year.
