According to NFL Network’s Peter Schrager, the Los Angeles Rams were smitten with Georgia tight end Brock Bowers.
Schrager revealed that the Rams explored potential trades to move up in the 2024 NFL draft to secure Bowers.
However, Brock Bowers ended up being selected 13th overall by the Las Vegas Raiders, leaving the Rams to pick Florida State edge-rusher Jared Verse at No. 19.
Standing at 6’3″ and weighing 243 pounds, Bowers’ appeal was evident with his impressive college stats of 2,538 receiving yards and 26 touchdowns over three seasons. His ability to create mismatches made him a daunting prospect for college defenses.
Despite the Rams’ admiration for Bowers, opting not to pay the hefty price to acquire him might have been a prudent decision. Past Super Bowl successes have showcased the impact of tight ends like Travis Kelce and Rob Gronkowski, but addressing other team needs was crucial for the Rams.
By selecting Verse, the Rams addressed a pressing issue in their defensive lineup. With the retirement of defensive tackle Aaron Donald, there was a glaring gap in their defensive line.
While promising talents like Bryon Young and Kobie Turner showed potential with 17 combined sacks in their rookie season, Donald’s absence highlighted the necessity for another dynamic pass-rusher.
Verse, with his impressive track record of 18 sacks and 29.5 tackles for loss during his tenure at Florida State, fits the bill perfectly to bolster the Los Angeles Rams’ defensive front.
