The Miami Dolphins acquired wide receiver Chase Claypool in a trade with the Chicago Bears on Friday morning, and Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel is excited about the prospect of having Claypool in the team’s already impressive stable of pass-catchers.
“You have to stay steadfast to the commitment of making your team as good as it could be,” McDaniel said, via Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk. “Sometimes things come across your radar that you weren’t even looking for, but, when you assess it, if it falls under the category this has a chance to make us better then you jump on that.”
Claypool is now going on his third team since entering the NFL as a second-round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers back in 2020. Claypool had a couple of solid seasons in Pittsburgh, but he regularly found himself in the doghouse of head coach Mike Tomlin and was traded to the Bears midway through 2022.
The 25-year-old was then hardly utilized in Chicago, as he has registered a grand total of 18 catches on 43 targets since linking up with the Bears last November.
However, the Dolphins obviously feel that Claypool can produce in the right environment, which is why McDaniel is calling the acquisition an “exciting opportunity” and appreciates the fact that Claypool, who expressed his displeasure with his role in the Windy City, “wants to take things into his own hands.”
McDaniel added that Miami was “crystal clear” about its expectations from him and thinks that Claypool’s athleticism will make him a great fit in a receiving corps that already includes Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle.
“You guys want me to say it, don’t you? He’s fast,” McDaniel said.
Chase Claypool will not be with the Dolphins when they take on the New York Giants this Sunday, but he will likely make his South Beach debut in Week 6.
