The Minnesota Vikings may end up losing superstar edge rusher Danielle Hunter to free agency, but Dallas Robinson of Pro Football Network thinks they can sign a younger defender to replace him.
Chase Young.
Young is an interesting commodity heading into the offseason.
The former No. 2 overall pick got off to an impressive start with the Washington Commanders in 2023, registering 15 tackles and five sacks over his first seven games.
He was then traded to the San Francisco 49ers at the deadline back in October, and he proceeded to log just 10 tackles and 2.5 sacks in the Bay.
Couple that with Young’s injury history and the fact that he has yet to post double-digit sacks in a single season, and you have to wonder just where his market value is.
Of course, a team can give him a lucrative long-term deal based on his potential alone. He was viewed as a can’t-miss prospect back in 2020, and there is no doubt that he has shown flashes of brilliance.
At the same time, this is a results-based business, and Young has not yet proven that he has what it takes to be an elite pass rusher on the NFL level.
The 24-year-old, who played his collegiate football at Ohio State, enjoyed an impressive rookie campaign with Washington four years ago, racking up 44 tackles, 7.5 sacks, four forced fumbles, fumble recovery and a defensive touchdown en route to a Pro Bowl appearance.
However, the following year, Young tore his ACL nine games into the season. He would play in just 12 games between 2021 and 2022, amassing a grand total of 1.5 sacks.
Young bounced back slightly this past season, but not enough to warrant a hefty contract.
We’ll see if the Vikings are able to nab Young on a team-friendly deal next month. Or if they express any interest in him at all.
