A year ago, it looked like quarterback Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield had hit the end of the road.
He had split the 2022 campaign between the Carolina Panthers and Los Angeles Rams, throwing 10 touchdowns and eight interceptions in 12 games.
Mayfield then signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during the offseason, and not a whole lot of people expected much from him, especially considering how he looked the past couple of seasons.
Instead of continuing his downward spiral, Mayfield has seen somewhat of a resurgence this year, throwing for 1,363 yards, eight touchdowns and four interceptions while completing 65.2 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 89.2 over the Buccaneers’ first six games.
Mayfield is set to hit free agency this offseason, and if he continues his current run of success, he will absolutely be a relatively sought-after target for quarterback-needy ballclubs.
Chad Graff of The Athletic sees a potential destination for Mayfield: the New England Patriots.
The Patriots have gotten off to a 1-5 start this season which has been due much in part to the struggles of third-year quarterback Mac Jones, who has thrown five touchdowns and seven interceptions in 2023.
Of course, New England almost certainly would not view Mayfield as a long-term solution, but, as Graff notes, the Pats could view him as a bridge to the future.
Mayfield was originally selected by the Cleveland Browns with the first overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft. He produced mixed results with the Browns, leading them to their first playoff appearance in nearly two decades in 2021 but also laboring at other points.
Cleveland ended up trading Baker Mayfield to the Panthers in July 2022 after a poor campaign the year prior.
Overall, over the course of his first five-plus seasons in the NFL, Mayfield has thrown 110 touchdowns and 68 interceptions while posting a passer rating of 89.2.
