The New England Patriots are in desperate need of some offensive weapons, so they should be major players in the free-agent market and in trade talks this offseason.
Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox thinks that the Patriots should make a play for Cleveland Browns wide receiver Amari Cooper.
This is, of course, assuming the Browns are at all willing to move Cooper, but for the right price, it may be a possibility.
Cleveland is $20.6 million over the salary cap heading into the offseason, and moving Cooper would save the club $12.4 million.
If the Browns can extract some significant value from New England in exchange for Cooper (maybe a couple of draft picks), it may be open to sending the star wide out packing.
Cooper is coming off of a terrific 2023 campaign in which he played 15 games and achieved a career-high 1,250 receiving yards off of 72 catches. He added five touchdowns en route to his fifth Pro Bowl selection.
The 29-year-old, who played his collegiate football at the University of Alabama, was originally selected by the Oakland Raiders with the fourth overall pick of the 2015 NFL Draft.
He spent the first three-and-a-half years of his career with the Raiders, making three trips to the Pro Bowl. The Raiders then traded him to the Dallas Cowboys midway through 2018, and he would then spend three-and-a-half seasons with the Cowboys. During that time, Cooper made two Pro Bowl appearances.
Dallas would ultimately deal Cooper to Cleveland in March 2022.
Cooper has been an integral piece of the Browns’ offense during his first two years with the club, so the chances of Cleveland moving him seem slim.
But, stranger things have happened in the NFL, and if the Browns do place Amari Cooper on the trade block, the Pats should certainly try and get involved.
