Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson was off to the races in Week 2 against the Houston Texans. He was dominating the game with his legs as the Texans had no answer for the dynamic athlete as a rusher.

Anthony Richardson capped off the Colts’ first offensive drive with an 18-yard rushing touchdown, finishing off a 75-yard drive. After a fumble by quarterback C.J. Stroud on a strip sack, the Colts wasted little time hammering the ball into the end zone for another touchdown.

It was once again Anthony Richardson who scored, going 15 yards on the first play of the drive to give Indianapolis a 14-0 lead. Unfortunately for the Colts, that was the beginning of the end of their star rookies day.

At the end of the run, Anthony Richardson was hit hard as he thought he was home free into the end zone. His head hit the turf and that is the play in which it is believed he suffered a concussion. No one took him out of the game, as he self-reported the symptoms following the team’s third drive.

Anthony Richardson ended up in concussion protocol, which puts his availability for Week 3 against the Baltimore Ravens in jeopardy. Colts head coach Shane Steichen confirmed that this morning, as the No. 4 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft won’t be practicing. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network shared the update.

Colts’ owner Jim Irsay spoke after the game about the situation, as Richardson has finished both games of his career on the sidelines.

“You’re always concerned,” Irsay said Sunday’s game. “The first game, he banged up the knee, but it was OK, just a contusion. This game, banging the head. I think it’s just something where he’s got to protect himself. He’s a big, physical guy. Obviously, he can run the football, and guys do a lot of running now at that position. And, so I think self-protection is an issue.”

This will certainly be something to keep an eye on going forward. After his first game, Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence offered him some words of advice, saying he needs to avoid taking hits at this level.

That is something Anthony Richardson is certainly learning the hard way, as guys are faster and stronger in the NFL than in college. If he doesn’t start protecting himself a little more, injuries could become a regular concern for him and the team.
