The New York Giants rewarded quarterback Daniel Jones with a lucrative extension following the 2022 season, a sign that New York had full faith in Jones. The Giants are currently just 2-5 in 2023, however, and Jones has not performed at a high level. Jones has also missed time with injury concerns. This has allowed backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor to start in recent weeks.
Taylor performed well in Week 7 which has led to questions about Jones’ QB1 job security.
Head coach Brian Daboll was asked about the chances of Taylor becoming the Giants starting quarterback.
“Yeah, I’d just say Tyrod had a good game this game,” Daboll stated, via Michael Obermuller of Heavy. “He’s a true pro and I’m glad we got him.”
A Daniel Jones versus Tyrod Taylor QB1 debate wasn’t expected to come to fruition in 2023. Jones’ injury absence and struggles while on the field combined with Taylor’s respectable performance has led to the discussion though.
In five games, Jones has thrown for 884 yards and two touchdowns with six interceptions. Taylor, meanwhile, has yet to throw an interception and has recorded two passing touchdowns and 571 yards through the air across six games (two starts).
In the end, the Giants are likely focused on the future amid their disappointing season. Benching their franchise QB in Jones, who is only 26, in favor of the 34-year-old veteran Taylor would be a surprising move. Unless New York firmly believes Taylor will provide the Giants with a better opportunity of overcoming the odds and reaching the playoffs in 2023, New York will probably stick with Jones for now.
Still, there is an argument to be had here. Taylor is giving the Giants something to think about. Either Jones or Taylor, depending on Jones’ health, will look to lead the Giants to a victory over the New York Jets in Week 8 at home.
