The New York Jets need to add some more weapons for Aaron Rodgers, and wide receiver Mike Evans could be the answer for them in free agency.
SportsLine Oddsmakers have given the Jets the third-best chance to sign Evans in the coming weeks, putting their odds at +600. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Houston Texans are both in front of them.
New York doesn’t have a whole lot of cap room entering the offseason, but it is certainly in desperation mode heading into 2024.
The Jets were hoping to contend for a Super Bowl this past year after acquiring Rodgers in a blockbuster trade with the Green Bay Packers last spring, but Rodgers tore his Achilles on Gang Green’s opening offensive drive of the regular season, effectively ending the club’s championship aspirations.
Now, Rodgers is 40 years old, so the clock is ticking for New York.
The Jets do have Garrett Wilson in their receiving corps, but beyond him, their depth at the position is very thin, and their offensive talent overall is not exactly elite.
Adding a receiver like Evans, however, would change things significantly.
Evans has spent the first decade of his career with the Buccaneers and has posted over 1,000 yards in all 10 of his NFL seasons, which is a league record.
This past season, the 30-year-old hauled in 79 receptions for 1,255 yards and a league-leading 13 touchdowns en route to his fifth Pro Bowl appearance. He also earned a Second-Team All-Pro selection.
While there are some who say teams should have trepidation about giving Evans a lucrative long-term deal given his age and mileage, he remains one of the most productive wide outs in football and doesn’t seem to be showing any signs of slowing down.
If the Jets are serious about winning next year, giving Mike Evans a serious look in free agency would probably be a fine idea for them.
