New York Jets Tried To Make A Major Offseason Trade

The New York Jets signed Mike Williams to bolster their receiving corps last month, but before doing so, they almost swung a trade for another weapon.

According to Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic, the Jets also pursued wide receiver Jerry Jeudy, whom the Denver Broncos traded to the Cleveland Browns.

Rosenblatt says that New York even offered the Broncos more compensation for Jeudy than the Browns. Denver ultimately sent Jeudy to Cleveland for a fifth-round pick and a sixth-rounder.

Whether or not the Jets also would have signed Williams if they acquired Jeudy is up for debate. You have to figure that New York probably would have passed on Williams at that point, as it may not have been able to fit his salary into its financial situation.

Jeudy, who played his collegiate football at the University of Alabama, was selected by the Broncos with the 15th overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft.

The 25-year-old was a pretty significant disappointment in Denver, as he failed to register a single 1,000-yard campaign. He came close in 2022, finishing with 967 yards. In Jeudy’s defense, he missed two games, so he probably would have cracked the 1,000-yard mark that season had he remained healthy.

This past season, Jeudy caught 54 passes for 758 yards and a couple of touchdowns.

The Jets were in dire need of another receiver behind Garrett Wilson. Prior to signing Williams, Allen Lazard had been serving as the club’s No. 2 wide out.

Now, New York has an impressive duo of Wilson and Williams, and it may also end up selecting another wide receiver in the NFL Draft.
