Recently, New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers expressed his frustration with criticism of fellow signal-caller Zach Wilson, who was reportedly reluctant to retake his position as the team’s starter.
Apparently, the rumor that Wilson was uncomfortable taking back the reins under center came from the Jets’ organization, and Rodgers had a lot to say about it during his weekly appearance on the Pat McAfee Show earlier this week. Specifically, Rodgers said it was “chicken (expletive) at its core” for someone inside New York’s front office to tell that to a reporter and that it “has no place in a winning organization.”
Jets head coach Robert Saleh was asked about Rodgers’ comments on Wednesday, and when prodded with the question as to how he feels when a player “essentially attacks the organization,” Saleh downplayed everything.
“I don’t think it’s an attack on the organization, but I always appreciate Aaron’s thoughts and comments,” Saleh said, via Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk. “We’ll handle all that stuff internally, but like I said, everyone’s going to have their thoughts, but those are the things we’ll handle internally.”
New York initially acquired Rodgers in a blockbuster trade with the Green Bay Packers this past offseason. As a result, Gang Green was expected to contend for a Super Bowl with a future Hall-of-Famer at the helm.
However, unfortunately for the Jets, Aaron Rodgers ultimately tore his Achilles on the team’s first offensive series of the season, forcing Wilson back into a starting role.
The results have been disastrous, as Wilson has thrown for 1,944 yards, six touchdowns and seven interceptions while completing just 59.2 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 73.8. He was benched in favor of Tim Boyle last weekend, and Boyle was then replaced by Trevor Siemian. It turned out that neither backup was an effective option, leading the Jets to turn their attention back to Wilson.
Wilson is now in his third season after being taken with the second overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft. He has gone just 11-20 as a starter and has totaled 21 touchdowns and 25 picks.
New York is 4-8 and will battle the Houston Texans this Sunday.
