Coming into Week 6, the Philadelphia Eagles were one of two undefeated teams in the NFL, and it looked like they had a good shot at remaining undefeated when they went up against Sauce Gardner and the New York Jets.
But the Jets surprised them by locking down their running game and achieving a 20-14 victory in Bergen County. Philly quarterback Jalen Hurts was forced into three interceptions, and while wide receiver A.J. Brown collected 131 receiving yards, none of his teammates were able to muster even 50 yards in the air.
New York star cornerback Sauce Gardner could be credited at least somewhat for the Eagles’ struggles in their passing game outside of Brown. Following the game, Gardner threw some shade at Brown.
Gardner is the reigning Defensive Rookie of the Year who also earned Pro Bowl and All-Pro First Team honors last season. The Jets have a 3-3 record and a two-game winning streak thanks to their defense, and Gardner has been a big part of that prowess.
It is surprising to see them apparently in the hunt for a playoff spot after future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers, whom they traded for in the offseason, tore his Achilles in their first offensive series of the season. But they have gotten here by being scrappy and refusing to give in.
For the Eagles, it’s back to the drawing board. Brown is having an outstanding season and fellow wideout DeVonta Smith is chipping in as he always has the last couple of years, but they could use a little more production at that position.
Elsewhere, it could simply be a matter of shaking off the complacency and boredom that always threatens to follow an appearance in the Super Bowl. Philly got there lost season and seemed to have the game in hand, only to blow a 10-point halftime lead and give up the Vince Lombardi Trophy to Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.
