NFC Team Emerging As Darkhorse Contender For Russell Wilson

The Denver Broncos have given Russell Wilson permission to speak with other teams in the wake of announcing they will be releasing him.

While the Pittsburgh Steelers have been labeled the favorites to land the veteran quarterback, an NFC team appears to be emerging as a darkhorse contender to land his services.

The New York Giants.

Adam Schefter of ESPN has reported that Wilson met with the Giants on Friday morning before heading to Pittsburgh to meet with the Steelers. Schefter says it was an “exploratory meeting.”

Several years ago while he was still with the Seattle Seahawks, Wilson expressed interest in the Giants, so the fact that he apparently met with New York does not come as much of a surprise.

The Giants signed Daniel Jones to a four-year, $160 million contract extension last offseason, but the first year of his deal did not go very well, as he struggled mightily before tearing his ACL. He also dealt with neck issues, which has Big Blue concerned about his long-term durability.

New York is expected to go in a different direction under center this spring and owns the sixth overall pick in the NFL Draft next month, so the general consensus is that it will draft a signal-caller.

But perhaps the Giants are also considering signing Wilson.

Whether or not New York would also take a quarterback in the draft if it signs Wilson is anyone’s guess, but given the fact that Wilson is 35 years old and didn’t exactly have a great ride with the Broncos, it would make sense for the Giants to still draft a quarterback.

Wilson spent the first 10 years of his career with the Seahawks before being traded to Denver in March 2022. He was expected to transform the Broncos’ franchise, but instead, his first year in the Mile High City ended up being the worst season of his career, as he threw 16 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

He actually played some solid football in 2023, totaling 3,070 yards, 26 touchdowns and eight picks, but he did not see eye to eye with head coach Sean Payton.

We’ll see if Russell Wilson and the Giants can find a match, but you would think the nine-time Pro Bowler would want to join a contender.
