NFL Analyst Believes Raiders Should Pursue Deion Sanders

Deion Sanders, Las Vegas Raiders

The Las Vegas Raiders fired head coach Josh McDaniels this week, and Antonio Pierce is now serving as the club’s coach on an interim basis.

Unless Pierce dazzles for the remainder of the season, chances are, he will not be a permanent fixture as the Raiders’ head coach. That means a search will begin.

Pete Prisco of CBS Sports threw an interesting name out there: University of Colorado coach and NFL legend Deion Sanders.

While it’s fun to think about Sanders coaching the Raiders, it’s also difficult to realistically imagine.

First of all, Sanders himself has said that he couldn’t picture himself coaching an NFL team because he feels that he would be too tough on the players, which could result in problems.

Second, it’s not like Sanders has had a great deal of collegiate success just yet, so I’m not sure what makes Prisco think he could succeed on the professional level.

Yes, he went 15-5 at Jackson State, but he has gone just 4-4 with Colorado this season as the Buffaloes have lost four of their last five games. That included blowing a 29-0 lead in a 46-43 loss to Stanford.

It’s entirely possible that Sanders could make a good coach someday, but right now, he is very unproven even as an NCAA coach. Maybe sometime down the line, Sanders will get the opportunity to coach in the NFL, but there are certainly plenty of more qualified candidates for Las Vegas to pursue at the moment.

And again, even if the Raiders reached out to Deion Sanders about the job, he might not even accept an interview given the fact that he stated he does not want to coach on the NFL level.

The Raiders franchise has been one of the worst in the NFL—if not the worst—over the last couple of decades. They have made just two playoff appearances since 2003 and have not won a playoff game since making it all the way to the Super Bowl back during the 2002-03 campaign.

Through the first eight games of 2023, Las Vegas is just 3-5.

The Raiders will take on the New York Giants this Sunday.
