The Panthers made a strategic move in hiring head coach Dave Canales, renowned for his ability to develop quarterbacks. With a track record of success with players like Russell Wilson, Baker Mayfield, and Geno Smith, Canales brings hope for Young’s progression in his sophomore year.
The team’s success hinges on bolstering their roster through free agency and the draft, prioritizing support for Young. As the franchise invested heavily in the Heisman Trophy winner, maximizing his potential during his rookie contract is paramount.
Despite a turbulent first season, expectations remain high for Young. Some, like Schuyler Callihan from Sports Illustrated, even predict he will outshine his peers, including C.J. Stroud.
“I do think a [C.J.] Stroud dip could come at some point, especially if offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik gets a head coaching job next year after interviewing really well on the circuit during this cycle. All that said, I wanted a way to get into my prediction that the Panthers will look far different offensively this year and lightyears better in terms of efficiency. We will finally see an offense designed for [Bryce] Young, by a play-caller who has already made life so much better for the likes of Baker Mayfield and Russell Wilson.”
However, such predictions seem ambitious considering the contrasting circumstances of Young and Stroud. Stroud landed in a more favorable situation with the Houston Texans, benefiting from a stronger supporting cast and coaching staff.
Carolina’s success depends heavily on Young’s improvement under Canales’ tutelage and the team’s ability to strengthen their offensive weapons. Young must address weaknesses in his game, such as deep ball accuracy and pocket presence, with guidance from Canales.
Writing off Young as a bust based solely on his rookie season would be premature, especially considering the potential impact of Canales’ coaching. While there are risks, this partnership could mark the beginning of a promising career for Young.
With his entire career ahead of him, Bryce Young has the opportunity to learn from his rookie experiences and emerge stronger. Perhaps, in retrospect, his challenging first year will prove to be a valuable learning curve.
