Heading into the 2024 NFL Draft, the Atlanta Falcons were viewed as one of the most unpredictable teams in the first round. Holding the No. 8 overall pick, no one truly knew what direction they were going to go.

The initial round of the 2024 NFL Draft unfolded just as many had anticipated: in a whirlwind of surprises and strategic maneuvers. Trades and unexpected player selections added an extra layer of excitement to the evening, captivating NFL enthusiasts everywhere.

Among the most startling choices of the night was the Falcons’ decision to snag Michael Penix Jr. with the eighth overall pick. The move sparked immediate speculation and debate among Falcons devotees and fans across the league alike.

Critics were quick to question the selection, particularly given the Falcons’ recent signing of Kirk Cousins to a lucrative four-year contract extension earlier in the offseason.

Nevertheless, despite the eyebrow-raising nature of the pick, there remains a sense of hope and anticipation surrounding Penix’s potential to thrive in the league, notwithstanding the unconventional landing spot.

The announcement prompted swift reactions, including that of Mike Golic, whose response was promptly shared on Twitter by the GoJo and Golic Show.

Golic expressed confidence in Penix’s abilities, suggesting that he possesses the necessary attributes to emerge as the top quarterback in his draft class in due course.

While Michael Penix Jr. may not immediately secure a starting role in his inaugural or sophomore NFL seasons, Golic believes he has the talent to seize the opportunity when it arises.

Across the league, teams are taking note of successful precedents set by the likes of the Kansas City Chiefs with Patrick Mahomes and the Green Bay Packers with Jordan Love. Both teams opted to draft quarterbacks in the first round, affording them the invaluable opportunity to develop alongside seasoned veterans before assuming the mantle of starting quarterback with aplomb.

No one truly knows what the future holds for the rookie Falcons’ quarterback. But, it’s always better to grab a young quarterback of the future before you absolutely have to have one.
