Zach Ertz
The Philadelphia Eagles were forced to lean heavily on the tight end position to produce in the passing game last season. With Zach Ertz setting the tone, they were able to overcompensate for significantly underwhelming wide receiver production.
During the 2019 season, Ertz received a total of 135 targets and hauled in 88 catches for 916 yards and six touchdowns in 15 appearances. He didn’t end up having quite as many yards as the top tight ends in the league but did end up fairing favorably in the touchdown department.
It’s difficult to see the justification for ranking Ertz ahead of Waller considering the discrepancy in yardage between both players. However, a case can be made if it’s a projection looking ahead of the 2020 season since the Eagles will have more talent on offense.
The upcoming season should feature simpler conditions for Ertz to produce with DeSean Jackson healthy and Jalen Reagor added from the 2020 NFL Draft. The speed they will have at receiver will help spread the field making it easier for the tight end position to produce.
